When it Comes to Security, “No Significant Difference” Between PC and Mac

by admin on May 14, 2010

David Harley, vice president of antivirus developer ESET, gave a presentation at the recent Infosecurity Europe conference entitled “Apple, Security, and the Power of Perception.” His company’s findings echo what a growing number of security experts have been saying in recent months, namely that, for the most part, Mac users aren’t nearly as safe from malware and related threats as they think they are.

According to research conducted by ESET, less than half of Mac users make use of antivirus software, compared to about 92% of Windows users. Similarly, while more than half of Windows users feel that their machines are “very” or “severely” vulnerable to malicious software, only about 20% of Mac users had that response.

Harley went on to point out that there are now more exploits for Mac than ever before, including keyloggers, trojans, fake security apps, adware, DNS changers, rootkits, and more. The only way for users to reliably defend their systems against these threats is to use security software, and judging by ESET’s numbers, there are still many Mac users who haven’t got the message.
