Speculation About Mac-based Ransomware

by admin on April 14, 2010

While Mac users still generally don’t have to worry about the same range of security threats that Windows users have to deal with, there has been speculation recently that this situation could be changing already.

One new threat that Mac users may face in the near future is “ransomware.” This is a specific type of malware that acts to block the user from accessing the system, either by using a “blocker” screen that shows up when the system starts up, or by disabling critical services or encrypting important files. The user is then prompted to purchase a decryption tool from the hackers, or make a payment to them in some other way.

Mac OS X users recently demonstrated that ransomware can be used against Macs by creating a working “proof of concept” application. This may only embolden hackers who are tempted to attack growing Mac user base.
