Adobe has released an update for the Windows and Mac versions of Photoshop CS4. While the patch addresses various performance and interface issues, its main focus is security, as several serious vulnerabilities had been discovered recently.
This is the latest in a series of significant security-related updates for Adobe software. Although issues with its Reader, Acrobat and Flash programs have been widely reported for quite a while now, the Photoshop update comes as a bit of a surprise.
Observers will be interested to see what, if any, effect the revelations of security problems in Photoshop will have on the already deteriorating relationship between Apple and Adobe.
Steve Jobs recently caused a stir with his public criticism of Flash, and even though he didn’t dwell on the security issue in particular, it’s been known for some time that vulnerabilities in Flash, and their potential implications for Apple operating systems’ reputation as “secure,” are a major reason why Flash is not supported by Apple devices like the iPhone or iPad.
