Apple has made another security update available for users of Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. Security Update 2010-003 itself actually deals with just a single security vulnerability in Mac OS X, albeit a serious one.
Before now, it was possible for hackers to place malicious code in embedded fonts within downloadable and viewable documents, which could then enable them to remotely execute code on the target computer.
This specific vulnerability was actually discovered at least a few weeks ago by noted security expert Charlie Miller, who provided some of the details of the problem to the public at the CanSecWest conference in addition to reporting it directly to Apple. Apple has officially credited Miller with bringing the problem to their attention. The update had been anticipated by security-savvy Mac users, who had noticed that Miller was not credited in the recent Mac operating system updates.
Security Update 2010-003 can be obtained from the Support Downloads section of the official Apple website.
