Intego VirusBarrier X6 Update Adds iPad Support

iPad Antivirus with Intego VirusBarrier X6

by admin on April 10, 2010

Mac security specialists Intego have released an update for their flagship VirusBarrier X6 Mac security program. The most notable aspect of the update is the addition of support for the iPad.

This makes VirusBarrier X6 the first anti-malware app to work with the iPad. It should be of particular interest to users of jailbroken iPads as well as those who expect to interface their iPad with their Mac computer on a regular basis. By scanning their iPads regularly, users can be sure that they’re not accumulating viruses or malware which can then be passed on to other devices, including their Mac computers.

The VirusBarrier X6 software itself isn’t actually run directly from the iPad. It’s run on the user’s Mac computer; when the iPad is connected to the Mac, VirusBarrier X6 will copy the iPad’s user folder to the Mac, and then scan it. If the iPad has been jailbroken, the entire device can be imaged and scanned.

Intego isn’t explicitly condoning users who jailbreak their iPads. This is more of a pragmatic move that addresses a potential security problem posed by jailbroken iPads. The update also adds some Mac-specific functionality to VirusBarrier X6, including an option to forward suspicious website URLs to Intego.
