Intego Security Memo Details New Malware Variant for Mac OS X

by admin on April 21, 2010

Mac security specialists Intego have posted an alert for April 16 regarding a newly discovered malware variant affecting Mac OS X.

This new threat, known as HellRTS, is actually an evolved version of a Mac malware app that first appeared in 2004. The new HellRTS is capable of creating a backdoor on Mac OS X-based systems which can allow hackers to take control of the system remotely.

HellRTS can attack both PowerPC and Intel-based Mac computers. When installed on a system, it proceeds to set up multiple servers on each user’s account under different, false application names. It can use these servers to send email, contact other servers, and allow direct access from other locations without the user’s knowledge.

While the new HellRTS has yet to claim any confirmed victims, it is currently being distributed on various hacking forums and will likely be incorporated in a variety of Trojan-style attacks before long. Users are advised to make sure that their antivirus program definitions are up to date in order to protect against HellRTS..
