ClamXav is perhaps the best-known free antivirus program for Mac. It’s actually based on the multiplatform open source application ClamAV.
What ClamXav adds is a graphical user interface. It also has an active community which acts as a de facto official source of technical support
Despite being freeware, ClamXav seeks to be a reliable, powerful antivirus solution for Mac. So, is it worth a download, or is it best skipped in favour of other options?
The Basics
ClamXav is available for Mac OS X versions 10.3 and up, 10.4 and up, and 10.5 and up, with a beta version for Snow Leopard (version 10.6 and up) also available. It’s compatible with PowerPC processors.
For a free antivirus program, ClamXav’s feature set is about what you’d expect. The big issues to consider, then, are performance and user friendliness.
The Pros
The first thing you’ll notice about ClamXav is how bare-bones it looks, and this reflects its overall nature. One positive about the ClamXav user experience is that you certainly won’t be overwhelmed with obscure options or prompts. It protects against threats to your Mac as well as Windows-based ones. This is more important than it may seem because you don’t want to be harbouring Windows malware to pass on to others.
With ClamXav, you do have some basic options such as scan scheduling. The ClamAV back end’s definitions are updated daily, so you can be fairly confident that you’ll always be on top of the latest threats. Additionally, the included ClamXav Sentry utility scans specified folders in real time, and ClamXav does have a quarantine function as well, although you’ll have to set up the quarantine folder yourself. The bottom line is that ClamXav will protect your computer reliably from malicious files.
The Cons
Despite its simplicity, ClamXav does have its problems. For one thing, it’s incredibly slow, at best taking twice as long as commercial antivirus software packages to scan the same files. ClamXav is significantly slower than even some of its freeware competitors, such as iAntiVirus from PC Tools. ClamXav is also a bit of a resource hog, and you won’t be able to do much else while it’s scanning.
It can be difficult to find the things you want to do in ClamXav’s interface. Scheduling scans, for example, is unnecessarily difficult. ClamXav doesn’t repair infected files, so if you have any, your only option will be to delete them. Its overall coverage, naturally, isn’t nearly as comprehensive as what’s offered by any of the commercial security packages.
The Verdict
Although it has some drawbacks, ClamXav is probably the best free antivirus program for Mac in terms of overall protection. However, its somewhat unintuitive interface and some of the complicated aspects of its operation mean that you have to be fairly Mac-savvy to get the most out of it. Also, if you need to be able to do other things while scanning for viruses, you should strongly consider investing in one of the commercial options.
