Apple has hired Jon Callas, co-founder of encryption development specialists PGP, as an operating system security specialist. Callas is the latest in a series of high-profile security experts to join the Apple ranks, following former Mozilla security chief Window Snyder and former One Laptop Per Child security designer Ivan Krstic.
This is actually Callas’s second stint with Apple, as he previously worked for the company in the mid-90s.
Given that Apple has suffered a series of embarrassing revelations regarding serious vulnerabilities within Mac OS X in recent months, it’s no surprise that the company continues to look for ways to improve on the security side of OS development.
It remains to be seen, however, if Apple can keep pace with the increasing demand among cyber criminals for Mac malware; as the Mac platform continues to eat into the market share of Windows, hackers will perceive more benefit in crafting malicious software specifically for Mac. In the meantime, Mac users are advised to install mac security software and make sure that their definitions are up to date.
